Mentor Training & Mentoring Courses

We've probably all been mentored, informally, at some time or other - and probably found it really helpful. These training courses will help you carry out that role in a more professional and effective way.

There are so many people who would benefit from having a mentor. If you've been successfully mentored - officially or unofficially - then you may want to 'pass it on' , and be available as a mentor to guide, advise and support others.

Mentoring Workshop Content

Mentoring principles: who, why, what, how....

A mentor needs to have key qualities to help them be 'fit for purpose'; they need to know why they want to be a mentor, the contexts that are most appropriate for mentoring, what it involves, how it differs from other support roles such as coaching and counselling, and the key skills to do it well...

Mentoring: partnership and process

These training courses will help you clarify the expectations of mentor and mentee; they will offer best practice for setting up a mentoring relationship effectively, professionally and with the right documentation.

How to be an effective mentor

What makes a great mentor?... We look at the most important personal qualities and skills

Mentoring challenges, and how to deal with them

The challenges that might occur in any mentoring relationship, so how to prevent them happening, or deal effectively with them if they occur.

Starting & setting up a mentoring scheme

If you are responsible for setting up a mentoring scheme in your organisation, these workshops will give you key suggestions to help you put such a system in place.

Who is mentor training for?

Our mentor training courses are ideal for anyone who is, or would like to be, a mentor, and would like to clarify the role, responsibilities, skills and benefits of being a mentor. They are particularly relevant if someone wants to:

 - learning outcome Be clear about the role and purpose of a mentor, and the range of contexts suitable for mentoring.
 - learning outcome As mentor, create their own excellent support system for the mentoring partnership, including relevant key documentation to be completed by both parties.
 - learning outcome Test and develop mentoring skills and approaches.
 - learning outcome Devise and run a mentoring scheme for your organisation.

Mentoring Workshop Activities

The 90-minute course provides an overview of mentoring, and the half-day builds on this, and takes the time to outline key support programmes and systems, at both a personal and organisational level. It also identifies key mentoring skills and approaches. On the full day course, opportunity is given in the afternoon for detailed practice of the knowledge and skills learned, by participants setting up a mentoring partnership, and running at least one mentoring meeting.

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

open discussion
casework
core learning input
tools & templates
paired activities
role play & simulation
your questions (Q&A)

My attention can easily wander, but this was never the case here, largely due to the variety of learning approaches used. Never a dull moment!

What are the benefits of mentor training?

More confidence in your role as mentor
Able to set clear, professional expectations
Personal development for both parties
Clearer understanding of mentor/mentee roles

Mentor Training Frequently Asked Quesitons

What does a mentor do?

They provide guidance, advice and support to the mentee. Ideally the mentor has relevant experience to share, but the main outcome should be the increased confidence of the mentee.

How does mentoring differ from coaching?

There is a lot of overlap, in both process and skills terms - and someone who is good at one role is often good at the other. But there is a crucial difference: the coach should resist any temptation to offer advice, instead encouraging the learner to come up with ideas themselves - whereas it is a key part of a mentor's role to offer such advice...

How will I know if I could be a good mentor?

The part you have to have now is motivation: a desire to share your experience in a way that's helpful to the mentee. The rest - key skills and systems - can all be learned, and will be covered in these training courses

Which of these courses should I choose initially?

Choose the shortest course if you are new to mentoring and want to find out more about it. If you also want to learn new skills and approaches, then the half day is the best option; the full day has all the elements just described, and will allow you to practice mentoring through practical activites.
