Stress Management
Courses & Training

Two key issues: how to prevent stress in the first place; then how to release it effectively if you are stressed. These training courses will provide suggestions for both.

We all know that stress - particularly persistent stress - is unhealthy and diminishes personal effectiveness and happiness; so preventing it is something worth achieving. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, we will get stressed, so we need ways to manage and release stress that are safe and healthy. These training courses offer useful and practical strategies for prevention and release.

Definition and causes

The starting point is to define exactly what is meant by stress: is it the same as pressure, and is it always harmful? And then - what causes stress - because if we are aware of, and can control the cause, we obviously can control or at least minimise the effect.

How stress works: the TEBI model

To understand how stress works, we need to clarify four key stages: trigger-emotion-behaviour-impact. A trigger creates and emotional response which in turn creates a behavioural reponse which will in turn have an impact: on yourself, on others, and/or the situation. These training courses examine this model in detail, and discuss the 5 positive interventions you can take to minimise or even remove the impact of each step.

The stress response

How come two people facing a potentially stressful situation, will react differently? How much does personality. lifestyle and the nature of the trigger affect how likely we are to be stressed? Our stress response questionnaire will help you identify your personal mix of these factors, and therefore, which particular stress management responses are likely to be more or less successful.

Preventing stress

A summary of the main suggestions for preventing stress occurring in the first place.

Releasing stress

You can’t always prevent stress, so we provide ways to help you reframe your experience of ‘stress’ and enable you to release it positively if it occurs.

Helping others who are stressed

You may work with others who are struggling to manage their stress, so we will look in detail at what you can do to help them.

Who is stress management training for?

Our stress management training courses are ideal for anyone who wishes to know more about preventing stress, and dealing effectively with its release should it occur; and/or who wants to learn helpful strategies to help others. In particular it will be useful for anyone who wants to:

 - learning outcome Know what causes stress, and if there are particular triggers that make them personally vulnerable to particular sources of stress.
 - learning outcome Work out a more constructive response to being stressed, and reduce or stop current unhealthy responses.
 - learning outcome Be less easily triggered into an overpowering emotional response; to manage their emotional response better.
 - learning outcome Help others who are affected by stress.

Stress Management Training Activities

The short (90 minute) course focuses on the TEBI model, which explains how stress works, and what you can do to intervene, to manage each of the four stages better. The half day looks in more detail at each of these four stages, and through a self-assessment questionnaire helps you identify if you have a personal stress profile that make you more prone, for example, to particular triggers; and the full day course covers all the above, and concentrates on how you might help others who are struggling with stress.

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

The course was over too quickly, and had definitely whetted my appetite. The ‘want more’ section was a brilliant additional support, allowing me to explore the topic further.

Stress Management Course Frequently Asked Quesitons

What are the main causes of stress?

The answer depends partly on each individual's mix of personality, lifestyle and experiences. It also depends on the extent to which the individual believes stress is inevitable, or takes more ownership of the cause and impact of stress.

Can stress be healthy and helpful?

There is a difference between short term and long term stress. We have evolved to respond to threat in a biological way which, in the instant, puts the body under short term stress to deal with the crisis. But this is short lived, and the stress response is entirely used to deal with the emergency. This is very different from long term stress, where the body and mind are regularly triggered into stress, but do not release it, at least not in the functional way just described. It is this persistent stress that is either stored or released unhelpfully, that threatens our health and happiness.

Is stress due to the level of pressure we feel?

Pressure is not the same as stress. We all face pressures of one sort or another in our lives, but we don't all get stressed. In simple terms, too much pressure can trigger stress, but so too can not enough pressure...

Which of these training courses is the most helpful to begin with?

The half day training course offers a definition and useful model of how stress works, then gives you a self-assessment questionnaire to help you determine your own mix of vulnerabilities to particular triggers, and how best you can either prevent such triggers, or deal effectively with any stress that 'gets through' your defences...
