Effective Teamwork Workshop Content

Groups and teams: the difference

The two are different, and there's no guarantee a group will become a team. We provide you with a self-assessment questionnaire to help you decide whether you belong to one or the other...

Characteristics of an effective team

To successfully convert a group of individuals into an effective team, you'll need to have, or create, 5 key characteristics...

Types of team

An overview of 4 types of team: Project, Liaison, Enterprise and Cultural... to help you recognise them, and run, or contribute effectively to, each.

Team progression

Good teams are dynamic - they move from start to finish effectively, managing each stage well. This is how they get from forming to performing, and how they manage each task, from commission to completion.

Team leadership

Different ways to lead a team, the skills needed to do it effectively… and what if the leader also has other duties, how can they be balanced?

Who is teamwork training for?

Our teamwork training courses are ideal for anyone either building a team, or wanting to improve existing team performance. These training courses will be particularly helpful for anyone who wants to:

 - learning outcome Build a new team, by knowing the key requirements for an effective team, and selecting and/or developing team members accordingly.
 - learning outcome Assess the performance of an existing team, to identify its individual and collective strengths and areas for development.
 - learning outcome Build and develop a team that is fit for purpose, given that different contexts require different types of teams, with different skills and roles.
 - learning outcome Consider how best to create effective leadership within any team.

Effective Teamwork Workshop Activities

The bite-size option will identify the difference between groups and teams, and how to convert one to the other; it will identify key characteristics of effective teams, and show how different types of teams are needed for different contexts. The half day programme uses questionnaires to help participants evaluate current team types, characteristics and skill sets, to work out any development needs. The full day provides an afternoon of work-related tasks where the participants have the opportunity to work in teams to test their learning and receive feedback.

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

casework
self-assessment questionnaire
facilitation
open discussion
core learning input
learning recap quiz
teamwork & collaboration
The course was over too quickly, and had definitely whetted my appetite. The ‘want more’ section was a brilliant additional support, allowing me to explore the topic further.

Teamwork Training Courses Frequently Asked Quesitons

How do you decide the qualities of a good team?

One size may not fit all: the qualities may depend on the context or task requirements of that team; and it may help if an existing team identifies and assesses the necessary team qualities themselves.

Why do apparently well-designed teams fail?

There are any number of reasons - some external to do with difficulties that are insurmountable; others to do more with team dynamics and dysfunctional behaviours. The history of airplane disasters provides plenty of examples of both. Airplanes are really well designed, and the crew well trained, but disasters still happen, and can provide a useful set of case studies as to why apparently effective teams still fail...

What's the best first step in building an effective team from scratch?

Firstly decide whether a team is necessary or not. If 5 people are tied up to complete a task that one person could have done in the same time or less, then using a team is inefficient and probably counter-productive. Teams are an expensive resource, so there needs to be an appropriate return on investment. Don't let a 'teams' solution be an automatic default decision...

Which is the best of the threeteamworktraining courses to take?

It depends: if you want an overview, and an idea of the different types of teams most suitable for different contexts, then the 90-minute version may be all you need; the half-day option outlines team characteristics, skills and leadership; allows you to assess how your current team meets those requirments, then discuss and create an action plan. And the full day allows everyone to apply the learning through completing some work-related team tasks.
