Performance Review & Appraisal
Training for Managers

The traditional '4 set piece appraisals per year' has moved on, and is increasingly being replaced by Performance & Development Reviews (PDRs). These training courses offer best practice in this area.

It is essential that employee performance is reviewed, and appropriate action is taken, whether the performance is poor or excellent. Our appraisal training courses will suggest how to review performance in a way which is professional, easy and effective.

Appraisal & Performance Reviews Workshop Content

A fresh approach to appraisal and performance reviews

6 key factors to get right in performance reviews

The 6 key factors to get right if you want to run an appraisal or performance review effectively.

5 key variables that help or hinder success

5 variables (BEAKS) that affect the success of any performance review - and how to harness them to maximum effect

The key skills anyone leading the review process needs - before, during and after any review meeting.

Typical difficulties - and how to prevent or deal with them

Improving the process may remove many of the difficulties - but there will be times when challenges arise. So it's helpful to know how to prevent their likelihood in the first place, and know what to do if any occur.

Appraisal & Performance Reviews Workshop Activities

The short training course outlines the main ingredients of a modern appraisal or PDR process: purpose, principles, structure, key stages and core skills; the half day shows how these ingredients can be further developed, especially core skills and dealing with difficulty. The afternoon of the full day involves the participants in simulating an appraisal process, allowing them to test and further develop what has been learned in the morning.

Never 'death by powerpoint'

We always provide a variety of learning approaches in each of our workshops.

Each workshop typically includes learning input from the trainer, supported by a range of mixed media, interactive elements, discussion and group work. Most workshops also include case work and practical skill-development activities to apply the learning, with more time dedicated to this in the longer courses.

'Want more?' resource pack

In addition to providing a copy of any slide deck, we always provide a ‘want more’ section, of curated resources including book summaries, podcasts, downloads and articles.

The course was over too quickly, and had definitely whetted my appetite. The ‘want more’ section was a brilliant additional support, allowing me to explore the topic further.

What are the benefits of appraisal training?

Able to create an up to date process that is fully fit for purpose
Managers who are more comfortable and confident with the process
Better two-way interaction
Development and performance properly linked

Appraisal Training for Managers: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between appraisal and performance review?

Traditionally appraisal schemes focused on set piece evaluation and rating for performance, with less regard, or only lip service to, development. A PRD (performance review & development) process tends to be more frequent, and pay more attention to development issues that arise.

Should pay and progression be linked to appraisal or review?

This is really a matter of opinion; pay can, and often is, linked to the results of the appraisal process; but unless the measures of performance are clear and achievable, it can cause more discord than satisfaction.

How often should performance be reviewed?

In reality, performance should be continuously being reviewed, even if only informally. The key principle here is that an under-performance, or new performance requirement, should be addressed as soon as it is known - whether that is part of a formal process or not.

Which of the 3 appraisal training courses is best for me?

It depends on what you want. If you want a straightforward overview, with key supporting documents, then the short course will provide that; the half day allows the key principles to be discussed and practiced, and the full day gives the afternoon over to running simulations of different parts of the process.
